In 1972, WNBC invited Murray The K to host four Swingin' Soiree shows for the July 4th weekend.
The response to this weekend special was so good that WNBC hired Murray for weekends and fill-ins soon after.
Contributor Rob Frankel considers the shows from that weekend to be some of the very best of Murray's career.
These programs were recorded by Joe Persek.

. . . Miss Bertha Butz is getting a little heavy, Diet-Rite is for you . . . [DESCRIPTION BY UNCLE RICKY - CONTRIBUTED BY ROB FRANKEL] From the first night of a four night July 4th Special, Murray The K and his Swingin' Soiree are featured. Murray is surrounded by NBC Monitor news and Harvey Pack (May the horse be with you) with re-created race results, but Murray still manages themed song sets and a goof-off segment composed of his own outtakes. This is Part One of Four from July 1, 1972. Ed Needham and Cal Thomas host the lengthy news features. Lots of interesting political and cultural content, like a reference to the The Newport Jazz Festival in the included newscasts. COMMENTS FOR Murray The K, WNBC New York, July 1, 1972, Pt.1 |
