. . . Just finished a delicious Shrewsbury . . . [CONTRIBUTED BY ROB FRANKEL. DESCRIPTION BY UNCLE RICKY.] Dick Summer demonstrates his casual, friendly and personable style on NiteLite, booming forth in the wee hours of the morning from 50KW WBZ in Boston, another classy property of Westinghouse Broadcasting. This was back when there were genuine "personalities" playing records on the radio, and the stations were much more than the records they played. Summer is very enjoyable, but you might not be so keen on his production. He's apparently decided that he can "converse" with the records if he cuts off the intro and cues them to a part of the vocal that he can weave into his rap. A lot of jocks did this, but they talked up the intro, they didn't cut it off. At least Summer's method guarantees he will always "hit the post." Because Rob has also contributed another Dick Summer aircheck, we know that he went on to work at WNBC/New York in the '70's. A quick Google shows a Dick Summer still working in voice-over, so this talented man may still be talking for a living. Pretty remarkable if so, as he might be pushing 80 - unless he was a teen on WBZ in 1964, and that seems unlikely. COMMENTS FOR DICK SUMMER, WBZ BOSTON, 1964 |
