PLAY Mark Rivers, WRKO Boston, April 1970 (18:04)

. . . From Mel-Anny, Lay Down! . . .

Description by Uncle Ricky

According to the notes submitted with this aircheck, Mark Rivers was the air name of Mark Driscoll while at WRKO, Boston, in April of 1970. Driscoll later became VP of Pyramid Broadcasting, and also worked at KSTP, WBBF, WAPE and KTNQ, among other memorable Top 40 stations.

This is actually a composite aircheck. It starts at midnight, and then five minutes and 54 seconds later, it starts at midnight again (maybe the next day.)

I lost track after that, completely baffled by the seemingly endless sequence of live spots for Dance Clubs. From this aircheck, it seems that WRKO either had a very aggressive "Club Special" spot package — or Boston was The Ultimate Place to Party. It sounds like WRKO had a piece of every hot club in the metro. Whatever, this is 1970 formula "Drake" done the overnight Boston way on the RKO mothership.

Our thanks to The John Rook Collection.
