. . . 99X is the Phrase That Pays Ten Thousand Dollars in this early aircheck of Jay Thomas on WXLO-FM in New York, New York, September 20, 1976. Sounds like this one was recorded from a mobile device, perhaps a radio-cassette recorder in the primary signal area. There are some fades, perhaps an editorial musical edit in the early minutes, and alternately, some portions that sound really good. Terry Nelson is featured on promos and spots. Edward Lewis and NEWS are a major percentage of what you will hear on your New York Music and Information Station. Jimmy Carter needs to get back to his peanuts, and there's a paranoid computer. Decades later, nothing has been done about these serious issues. Also, there are still "Democrats and Atheists". Some things never change. [MORE FROM THIS COLLECTION] [REELRADIO HOME] [FIND IT!] |

. . . Jay Thomas writes on his web site that he took less money to move to 99X in New York: When New York called I was making six figures in Charlotte, NC and was part owner of the station. I was married and the owners all but told me that one day the stations would be mine... but I needed to know what it was like at the Big Show. So, for less money, I went to 99X in NYC. I couldn't believe there was so little competition. Imus was in the market but he was either drunk or drugged out and ended up in Cleveland. So I just went nuts. As with Part One, there is some fading in Part Two, and one song was replaced to create a clean ending, but overall, this is good audio of a very early Jay Thomas 99X morning show. |
