. . . Roby Who? . . .

[Description by Uncle Ricky]

The Big Kahuna Roby Yonge is featured along with his pre-recorded sidekick Gadget on the most-listened-to station in Southern Florida, circa Spring, 1966.

This recording has a high noise level, but higher levels of great PAMS Series 30 ('N Set) jingles (and some earlier series), plus that boingy-boingy echo produced by a Hammond organ oil-damped (fluid column) reverbation unit. It's easy to hear from Yonge's affable, easy-going performance why he was invited north to WABC a couple of years later.

Roby Yonge died of a heart attack in Miami, Florida on July 18th, 1997. He was 54.

. . . Harketh! . . .

[Description by Uncle Ricky]

This is Part 2 of The Big Kahuna Roby Yonge on Storz' WQAM in Miami Florida, recorded on March 28, 1966.

Jim Dunlap is in the studio with Roby, and Dan Chandler is out driving around Fort Lauderdale beach in the Sunshine Pontiac GTO, undoubtedly with those those all-girl PAMS jingles blasting. Also, Robert Kaye is heard with a classic Bells & Whistles newscast.

Wish we could have been there to adjust the recording level - the gritty distortion is, at times, distracting. But the content is exceptional.

. . . One of America's Great Radio Stations . . .

[Description by Uncle Ricky]

Yes, One of America's Great Radio Stations it was, and read my exhibit descriptions above if you are unsure as to my sincere appreciation of WQAM in Miami.

Here's Part 3, the last and final of the entire botched recording. The distortion on this recording is so very terrible that I only offer it because of the importance of this radio station to the Top 40 story. If anyone has high-fidelity recordings of WQAM from 1966, please remember that published contributors are entitled to lifetime access to our Repository.

For a few blessed moments, it isn't too bad, but I would never want anyone to think I find this audio acceptable. For me, it hurts to listen. But it would hurt more to toss this one for technical reasons.
