[Introduction by Don Jennett] |
These two airchecks were recorded by then 16-year-old Bill Earl, longtime KRLA historian, on a standard reel-to-reel recorder that his mother had brought home for the weekend. The original reels were stolen, but fortunately, Bill made copies.
Both airchecks were made on the same day: June 16, 1967. This was the day that Dave Diamond and KBLA closed shop, switching to country KBBQ. It was also the first day of The Monterey Pop Festival, the pinnacle of The Summer Of Love, and the harbinger of 1969's Woodstock.

[Description by Uncle Ricky for this exhibit contributed by Don Jennett]
Charlie O'Donnell (d. November 1, 2010 at 78) was recorded on KRLA from approximately 8 until 9 AM on June 16, 1967. O'Donnell was Dick Clark's sidekick on American Bandstand. He was an on-air presence in Los Angeles for over two decades. Because of his tall and lanky appearance, he was known as The Jolly Lean Giant at KRLA. He was also a news anchor at KCOP-TV/13 for sixteen years.
Richard Beebee, best remembered as a co-founder of news satirists The Credibility Gap, is featured with KRLA news.

tell ya what she'd like best, long about knee-deep in June, 'bout the time the strawberries mellow on the vine, some Sunday afternoon - dedicate her a song at the sweetheart tree

[Description by contributor Don Jennett]
This June 16, 1967 aircheck of Casey Kasem begins with an introduction by Reb Foster, off to cover The Monterey Pop Festival that weekend.
Reb tells us that Bob Dayton will be filling in for him Saturday morning. This would be Dayton's first KRLA show, as he was about to do his last show on KBLA that same afternoon.
Light My Fire was obviously VERY popular.
