. . . Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to put an old position to rest . . .

[DESCRIPTION BY UNCLE RICKY and ROB FRANKEL]

This is Part One of M.G. Kelly's first show on KTNQ/Ten-Q from Saturday, March 18, 1978. As a bonus, the recording begins with a few minutes of The Real Don Steele.

Kelly was fired at KHJ at 2:55PM, he went across the street and was on TenQ at 6PM the same day! This would be highly unlikely in today's post-consolidation radio business. The other station that used to be "across the street" is now "across the hall", and both are owned by the same company.

At 15:05 into the MG aircheck, he does his Rod Serling impression and says, "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to put an old position to rest". That's another swipe at John Sebastian who, at the time, was imaging KHJ as "Position 93".

This exhibit is presented in two parts, and the entire aircheck is a composite from three different sources. Contributor Rob Frankel recorded the first part off the radio. There was a second scoped aircheck, and that one along with the first aircheck was restored a couple of years ago. The rest of the aircheck came from a third source, and that part was intact with the exception of one song that had to be restored.

TRIGGER TREAT AT MACHINE GUN PARTY — Machine Gun Kelly enjoyed the chance to shoot off one of his namesakes at a Hollywood party welcoming him to the 6-10pm air shift at TEN-Q/Los Angeles. Afternoon personality The Real Don Steele, pictured reeling from the blast, assumed host and MC duties while Gene Cotton provided live entertainment. At left, various onlookers wish for earplugs as Kelly plugs the ceiling while plugging his new gig. (From RADIO & RECORDS, April 7, 1978)

. . . K - H ... OK, I'll give 'em that one . . .

[DESCRIPTION BY UNCLE RICKY and ROB FRANKEL]

This is Part Two of M.G. Kelly's first show on KTNQ/Ten-Q from Saturday, March 18, 1978. Most of this recording was intact, and only one song was restored.

Nearly every jock who moves from one station to another in a short period of time slips back into the previous call letters at least once. Since Kelly had been at KHJ just hours before, it's not surprising when he accidentally starts saying "KHJ" - but catches himself and recovers with Whoops!.
